Bathroom Renovation: What You Need to Know

Renovating a bathroom on its own takes less time and money than a full apartment renovation. We walk you through the process and the trades involved.

Renovating just the bathroom on its own has become increasingly popular: it takes far less time and money than carrying out a full apartment renovation on the property.

The bathroom is a very important space in the home – it is usually where we start and end our day. That is why it matters so much that it fully meets our needs, in terms of both looks and function, and that we are happy to step into it every single day.

In a bathroom renovation we usually leave it to the Client to choose the tiles, sanitaryware, fittings and furnishings. In some cases, however, we help with this process too and source them through our reliable partners. It is worth buying these before the renovation starts, so that the work can progress smoothly.

The auxiliary materials needed for the transformation are always supplied by our company; this way we rule out possible hold-ups, and only first-class materials are built in. The quantity and price of these auxiliary materials are always itemised in the cost estimate.

The bathroom renovation process

  • Condition survey/consultation
  • Cost estimate/signing the contract
  • Starting/finishing the work on the agreed dates

In most cases a bathroom renovation involves alterations that affect almost every trade.

  • Preparation/demolition: demolition is an unavoidable part of the renovation, and it is usually 1–2 days of work. Quick demolition, rubble removal, and the work continues.
  • Plumbing: in older bathrooms, complete replacement of all the bathroom pipework is recommended – almost essential. The floor and walls have to be chased open and the new pipes laid. It usually takes one day.
  • Electrical work: it is worth checking the wiring in the bathroom too, especially if changes are being made. We cannot stress the importance of electrical work enough. So in many cases new wiring is essential here as well. It usually takes one day.
  • Wall repairs, concreting: the gaps left by demolition and by the plumbing and electrical work have to be made good, and the room prepared for tiling. The duration varies with the extent of demolition, but you can generally reckon with a week because of drying times.
  • Tiling: the spectacular phase of the build. The tiles, already on hand, are laid on the even walls and floor, followed of course by the indispensable grouting. It is always done as agreed in advance. The time needed depends on the size of the room and the amount of cutting, but we usually allow a week for tiling too.
  • Painting: painting in the bathroom is part of the final touching-up. Nowadays the new tiles often go right up to the ceiling, so only a few square metres of surface are left to paint. Because of drying, this takes 2 days.
  • Fitting out: the final stage of the long-awaited finish. This is when the sanitaryware, fittings, furnishings and everything else imaginable are installed. Fitting out usually takes one day, and once it is done, the new bathroom is complete.

Based on the above, a complete bathroom transformation takes roughly 3 weeks; this changes only in very special cases. Just 3 weeks are needed, and we can already enjoy the benefits of our new bathroom!
